Three students (Jonas Erhart, Ruben Strim & Anna Vargiu) and three teachers (Kathrin Fischer, Claudia Pellegrini & Rosanna Pruccoli) of the Sprachengymnasium had the chance of a lifetime to listen to and to meet Michael Cunninghan, the American novelist at the Pavillion des Fleurs in Meran on 19th July 2024. Cunningham is best known for his 1998 novel The Hours, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the PEN/Faulkner Award in 1999. He is also Professor in the Practice of Creative Writing at Yale University.
After gaining fascinating insight into his views and writings, Mr Cunningham had very kind words for all of us who went to him to have his books signed. He complimented the teachers for their precious work and was glad to hear that we still read excerpts of his novel in our English lessons. He had some friendly words also for our student Jonas, who joked with him about his handwriting, and for our former student (and now teacher at the Gandhi) Tommy Milanello, who had presented “The Hours” as a book-in-a-box presentation during Prof. Pellegrini’s lesson 15 years ago.
